CIGAR ETIQUETTE

Alright... ...sometimes, in life there are these things called rules.  Most of the time you can be VERY selective about what you wish to obey and what you wish to laugh at with scorn.  However, cigar etiquette is very real and is more or less expected in polite society.  Listed below are some published writings concerning cigars etiquette.  Underneath the bullet is my take on the "rule"

Zino Davidoff's Guide to Cigar Etiquette circa. 1967

  • Warm the foot of the cigar slightly before starting to puff on it.
----Warm it?  What does that mean? If you mean light it then maybe but how else do you smoke a cigar?

  • Remove the band carefully after lighting the cigar.
---If the band bothers you, remove it. I would recommend waiting until the ember gets closer to the band and then removing it.

  • Take your time in smoking it; a puff a minute is about right.
---Taking your time is a good thing but I see anyone counting to 60, I will make fun of them mercilessly.

  • Hold the cigar between your index finger and thumb.
---Use your middle and index finger with the thumb for balance

  • Let the cigar die a dignified death. After it's smoked half way, it will go out on its own.
---Stop smoking when you don't like the cigar

  • Dispose of the dead cigar discreetly and quickly.
---Dispose of the dead cigar, yes... ...discreetly???|

  • Wait at least fifteen minutes between cigars; anything less indicates obsessive behavior.
---Chain smoking cigars might be considered a bad thing, yes

  • Times have changed as so has the rules surrounding smoking cigars.  Cigar smoke is very pungent and if you leave the ash on the floor, it leaves a mess, but the same can be said for certain ethnic foods.  It all comes down to the same common sense rules the can be used for anything:

    • Be courteous to those near you who you do not know if they smoke.  Ask if they mind... ...you never know when someone near by might have asthma.

    • Clean up after yourself.  Your momma doesn't live here anymore. Throw away the cut cap/tip, dead stogies, bands, wrappers, etc.

    • No one really cares how you hold your cigar, but don't wave it around and burn someone.

    • When a cigar begins to taste bad, stop smoking it.  The last thing I need is to have you throwing up on the sidewalk.

    • When a cigar's potency hits you quicker than you expect, stop any activity and slow down the smoking of the cigar.

    • If someone offers you a cigar and you accept it, smoke it there with them if at all possible.

    • If someone lights a cigar incorrectly, tell them or assist in fixing the problem.

    • If someone offers you a cigar and you take it, offer them a cigar in the future.

    • Smoking cigars should be done when socializing, relaxing, or preferably both.

    • It is poor form to touch another person cigars while they are lit. It's even worse to take a puff from another persons lit cigar. Ask that person how it was and go buy one yourself.
